On September 5th,1774 , fifty-six delegates representing all the colonies except Georgia met in Philadelphia to discuss their problems with Britain. The members of the First Continental Congress were important and included George Washington, Samuel Adams and Patrick Henry. Independence from Britain wasn't discusssed, instead the members worked together and became unified to assert their rights with the British government. They wrote a draft of colonial rights, known as the Declaration of Rights, a list of their complaints to King George III and identified how Parliament had violated the colony's rights. They wanted the thirteen acts passed by Parliament since 1763 to be repealed. The Declaration of Rights talks about the right of self government, the right to decide their own tax system, the right to manage their own affairs, the king had the right to disapprove colonial laws, Parliament had the right to control trade in the British Empire, but Parliament did not have the right to pass such laws as the Stamp Act, Townshend Acts, and The Intolerable Acts, and only the colonial assemblies could tax the colonies. The First Continental Congress formed an organization known as the Association that agreed to boycott all British goods and trade passed a resolution to form militias. They also agreed to meet again in May 1775, if the British cooperated.
